iNaturalist

Challenge

Using the free app iNaturalist, you belong to a community of citizen scientists, helping to identify the flora (plants) and fauna (animals) in your immediate area, while adding to a worldwide database.

The app is available in the App Store and Google Play - https://www.inaturalist.org/

iNaturalist is a fabulous app that lets you tell the world what plant and animal species live in your neighborhood (and wherever you travel). It also lets you ask the world what you are seeing.

You might set yourself a goal of a set number of observations each day. Record any “natural” life forms you find (not your pets, friends, or houseplants). You can start on your own balcony, move to your yard, then your city block or a nearby park. It’s all useful to scientists identifying which species live where, when, and how their distribution changes over time.

All you have to do:

Notice what is around you … Take a photo … and upload. Easy.

That’s it! If you coordinate this activity so that there are a number of students doing this activity at the same time, you can create a group so you can see how many observations others are making .

Information about how iNaturalist is used in and around Leysin, Switzerland.

Here’s a short video that demonstrates that scientists really do care about YOUR observations - and specifically your observations in a city: City Nature Challenge 2020

Share your user name and the number of observations you made each day for 5 days in a row with Peak Challenges.

Register to take a picture of both triptychs, post in Peak Challenges & see what your classmates have done.
